Garbo on Set - Part IV

USA 1931 - Anna Christie (German Version)

In this production still from the German-language version of Anna Christie, Jacques Feyder, Garbo, and William Daniels show the confusion of a Belgian director, a Swedish star, and a cameraman from Cleveland all trying to work in German.

According to assistant film editor Chester W. Schaeffer, when Garbo watched the rushes and heard her pronunciation, “She laughed out loud at herself–very deep. A guffaw, almost.”

Shooting of the German version ended on August 16, 1930.

Since Garbo only interacted with John Barrymore in Grand Hotel, MGM's solution for placing her prictorially within the all-star cast was to paste her into the group photo.

Instead of retreating to her dressing room between camera setups, Garbo visited with the genial and witty John Barrymore. “She is a fine lady and a great actress,” said Barrymore. “And the rest is silence.” “You are the most entrancing woman in the world,” John Barrymore said to Garbo on the set one day.
