Astrology is at least a five thousand year old science. A horoscope is a chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, the astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth.  To create a horoscope, an astrologer first has to ascertain the exact time and place of the subject's birth.  In order to draw this chart, he divides a circle into 12 parts of 30 degrees. These parts correspond to the twelve sectors of the sky, called Astrological Houses and correspond to the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

The astrological aspects, such as Conjunction (0°), Opposition (180°), Square (90°), Trine (120°), Sextile (60°) are delineated in the center of the chart. The twelve signs of the Zodiac are located at the outer portion of the chart wheel.

Each Sign of the Zodiac is related to particular characteristics of human nature and to one of the four Elements (Fire, Earth, Air and Water). It can be cardinal, fixed or changeable.

The Sign rising over the horizon at the time of the birth is the Ascendant, or Rising sign. Every sign of the Zodiac is subject to the influence of the Ascendant and some of its characteristics are modified. The ascendant is generally considered the most important and personalized angle in the horoscope by the vast majority of astrologers.

Having constructed the horoscope, the astrologer can begin the task of interpreting the chart. This is a branch of astrology known as natal astrology , which involves building a complete picture of the personality of the subject.

Astrological signs represent twelve equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrological beliefs, celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the twelve signs at the same time are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression
