SUSAN LENOX - SCRIPTED BUT NOT FILMED

The orginal script also had some interresting scenes which were written by MGM contract writers.

One of the scenes from the script had the hapless Susan Lenox forced into a relationship by a sleazy carnival owner who tells her to get ready for bed. “There's a pint of gin with your name on it under your pillow,” he says. “Snap into it, baby.”

But the material was unacceptable and the scene was never filmed.

CAMILLE - THALBERG'S VERSION (USA 1936)

While producing Camille, producer Irving Thalberg died. After filming was ended and post-production began, Mayer assigned Bernard Hyman.

He was now the films new producer. Hyman arranged re-takes, cut some scenes or edit scenes from the original Thalberg produced film. It is not exactly known which scenes are cut.

It is said that this new version was setting up the characters too well. Some thought it was pure boredom and Camille would become an ordinary costume picture.

Long, pointless scenes had taken the place of the precise, neatly interlocking ones of the first version. Motivations were changed too. Scenes showing the Armand's jealousy were cut. He was now the same old dreary Armand Duval from the novel.

It is said that the preview of this “new” version was a disaster. But for unknown reasons this version was released.

The original Thalberg version was never released and it is not known how much of his produced footage was edited into a full film. It is not known what happened to his produced footage and to the edited material. It may was destroyed.

CAMILLE – ALTERNATIVE ENDINGS (USA 1936)

Thalberg died and Bernard Hyman was assigned as the new producer. Hyman arranged re-takes and re-wrote the ending.

Two alternate endings for the death scene were written. Three alternate endings were filmed during the re-takes.

The first had Garbo in bed (similar to the original Thalberg produced version). She had some more words to say before she died.

In the second she had less words to say before she died on the bed.

In the final and third re-shot, Garbo lowly slipped away in Armand's arms. This is also the version which was used for the final version of the film.

The two other alternative takes are lost, destroyed or unreleased.

NINOTCHKA - CUT SCENES

Filming ended on July 28, and news began to spread that Garbo and Lubitsch had made a superlative movie. It is said that the late-August preview was a little worrisome because Garbo's female co-star Ina Claire had stolen some scenes.

So Lubitsch cut two of Ina Claire's scenes and then brought her back to shoot transitional material. It is not known if those scenes  do still excist somewhere.

NINOTCHKA - CHANGED SCENES

In Ninotchka, three scenes were changed in the course of shooting. They involved changes in Garbo's wardrobe, which looked drab in the rushes.

The white tulle gown

She was given a stylish Russian blouse for the retake of her first scene in Leon 's apartment, and a luxuriant off-the-shoulder evening gown made of white tulle for the nightclub scene, which was first shot with a high-necked crepe dress.
